About the Artist
Elle Wilson

I began painting from about the age of 8 when my dad
bought me a wooden easel and oil paints. I used to create paintings
of the ancient yellow roses and lily pads which were found on the
beautiful mansion house estate where we lived. The mansion
house was not ours. My mother was the chef for a very rich family
and
it was a fabulous place to grow up.
I have always excelled in art at school. When we had
to create a business project for a class, I chose to do animal portraits
of cats and dogs and gained a number of commissions from my teachers.
I went to the University and gained a first class honors degree
in
Theatre Set and Costume Design and also continued to undertake
private art commissions of dogs.
After the University I spent a lot of time working
in computers and a little in television but just wasn't happy. I
just wanted to paint. In 1998 I was commissioned to make a life
size doll for one of
Britain’s oldest contemporary art dealers, Nick Treadwell.
I caught his eye whilst exhibiting in a London arts and crafts show.
In terms of painting the greyhounds, that began in
July 2005, when I was commissioned to paint a greyhound being taken
for walk by a
Siamese cat. I began my research into greyhounds and found a kind
of
magical addiction to their shape and form. There is something about
the sometimes pitiful eyes that are both sad and enchanting. They
captured me to continue to draw and paint them almost exclusively.
I now have a whippet called Millie-Moo. She is a black
and
white like a Friesian cow, hence the MOO. There is something quite
special about sighthounds. They are so loving that it is quite
amazing, and their shape so eloquently formed for speed. The whole
design of the way their ears fold back, the long legs, the paws,
a pure
genius of nature. I enjoy painting this breed and hope to be doing
this a long time.
Cheers Elle
